Shaping a minifig chain in LDCad (no replies)

Hi all,

Finally I got into LDcad and learning quick.

Now I found this really nice model of a jeep by Larry Lars:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/28192677@N06/5535839796/in/album-72157623381611053/
I made it digital exclusively with LDCad.
Then I made it with bricks, which was most fun because I had my own building instructions and parts list to find all bricks needed :-)
I made some minor adjustments and decided to ad a little chain at the front. See picture.

Now I want that chain made in LDCad. I've been trying a few things, but cannot get it right. See chain.mpd.
Can someone assist?
What I'd really like is it to be symetric like the real thing...

Thanks.

Travis,

A while ago we switched to ldview to render the Parts Tracker images. Do you remember what the library requirements for the executable were? I'd like to do something similar for the OMR, if possible.

LPub3D - rotstep (12 replies)

One of the hardest things to achieve is getting the perfect angle for a specific step. I normally use the standard angle, but sometimes you need to change it to show where a specific piece is attached...

I'm familiar with the use of the ROTSTEP command, both relative (which I use most) and absolute), but I was wondring if there were some better way to find the right angle than guessing the numbers.

When I used MLCad I used the preview window for the ROTSTEP command, but I haven't found anything similar in MLCad (yet). Since LPub3D also has a 3D view pane (which I haven't found a use for yet) I was wondering if that could be used to determine the correct numbers for a specific ROTSTEP command.

Lpub3D povray 3.7 rendering setting (2 replies)

G'day. I have installed the latest AIO setup and updated Lpub3D. When im using Lpub3d and the renderer as povray, can the rendered pics be of higher detail so to speak. Everything is set as it was installed. the povray selected setting is
[1920x1080 16:9 AA 0.3]
Width=1920
Height=1080
Antialias=On
Antialias_Threshold=0.3

but this gives blocky pixleated images in Lpub3d. So I wondering if I can make them high detail even maybe to the point of realism. I have attached a screen shot where you can see how I would like to change the quality of the lego renders.
Cheers Jono

LPub3D - show every instance of an element (no replies)

I'm working on BIs for WeDo models. These models are typically for (very) young builders and the instructions LEGO provide show every instance of the elements used (e.g. if there are 2 white 1x4 plates, the PLI shows 2 plates). Can this be done in LPub3D?

Rubber band messed up after saving, closing and opening (7 replies)

Hi folks,

Sorry to have been of the radar a bit now that we really got things going discussing LPub3D, LDCad and all interesting stuff.
I've been a bit busy with other stuff then LEGO and LDraw... :-(

However, I got around again practicing LDCad an decided to try to model this cute little technic set:
http://brickset.com/sets/8203-1/Rover-Discovery
It has a rubber band rather typically shaped by the way it is in the model.
I tried to model this band like it would fit the model (not the way I want exactly yet).
See this screencapture video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wo_lp3S9NrA
It looks nice but when I save the file, close it and re-open it, the band is totally messed up.
Doing some work on it again to get it a bit like the way it was, saving, closing and re-opening it even messes up further.

How can I solve that?
Is this the same issue that I had with the small minifig chain assembly I posted before? Is the band simply to small to calculate?

Then: how do I create a rubber band that mimics this band the way it is in the model?

Thanks.

Fade color LPub3D error (no replies)

I am building a big thing (that I cannot show) in tan on a green baseplate. I set the fade color to dark tan.
The thing is that it being a mono color model the fade color option is needed to clearify the new pieces.
However, the baseplate must remain green, because it is very ugly to see that in dark tan too in every next step after the first.
So I used a buffer exchange in every step that simply removes the baseplate and adds a new instance of the baseplate so it is not faded.

Then the fade color does something strange: the first new brick in line right after the STEP command is faded too.
Is this a know problem? Examples attached.

LPub3D - BOM sort error? (no replies)

In my quest to learn how to handle LPub3D I have come across yet another curious quirk.
I've found I can sort the elements in the BOM (right-click and select the pertinent option), but the result is somewhat unpredictable, or rather the sort function works differently from what you'd expect. The sorting mechanism works top to bottom (so far so good) and right to left. The "natural" way (mimicking the way we tend to read instructions) would be to sort left to right.

Is this a bug, "a feature", something we can somehow work around or something that can be changed in a future release?

I'm attaching a sample BOM sorted by colour to illustrate as it is the easiest sorting to show what I mean

LPub3D - page setup questions (no replies)

I've been looking at instructions generated with LPub to get some ideas of what's possible and I've seen some interesting things.

I've found out I can get a submodel to show up in the PLI of the step it is used in using
0 !LPUB PLI INCLUDE_SUBMODELS GLOBAL TRUE

Now I'm trying to figure out if I can show the complete submodel before the first step of that submodel in a PLI like bubble - I've seen it done, just haven't found the way to do it yet.

P.S. Jaco, I have been going through some of your excellent explanations on your website, but navigation is sometimes very complicated. I can never find a way to go to the next page, only up ;)

Unoffcial part not showing up in LPub3D in the PLI and BOM (1 reply)

Hi all,

What does LPub3D require to count and render an unofficial part, because I have this part not showing up in the PLI and BOM of a model. It is part 20310 (Design Brick) mocked up by Magnus.
Where ever I put it, LPub3D just won't count it nor render it in PLI and BOM.
It is rendered in de assembly images though, so it can find the part.
It is in the folder C:\Users\Public\Documents\LDraw\Parts
I manually added it to the parts.lst file like this:
20310.dat Brick 1 x 1 with Capital Open Stud (Mock-up)
Please help! I need some instructions done this weekend... :-(

Thanks.

P.S. LPub 4.0.0.11 (on the same system) renders and counts it just fine in the assembly images, PLI and BOM

Make black less black and render with white lines (2 replies)

Hi all,

How can I define a new color to use in LPub3D.
I have a model with much black and want the black to be less black (more like black rubber or very dark grey) and have the lines around the bricks in white.
I know one can do this in ldconfig? How? I have never used this before.

Thanks!

Callout point arrows different between loading (2 replies)

Hi Trevor,

When I add an arrow or when LPub3D does that when converting a submodel to to a callout and I drag the point to the place I want it to be, the arrow often changes between loading the same file.

It seems it occurs when I place the callout relative to the page, stepgroup or partslist.
Once in the correct postition, it renders correct.
Closing (and editing) the LDraw file and loading seems to mess things up.

Any idea what's happening?

Rotation icon cannot be placed relative to other objects on a single step page (2 replies)

Hi Trevor,

I just noticed the rotation arrow cannot be place relative to another object on a single-step page.
Right clicking the icon does not give you the option to move it.

On a multi-step page when you right-click the rotation arrow you can choose "Move rotation arrow" and place it relative to the Assem, stepnumber and partslist.

Feature request LPub3D - Free shapes (no replies)

Hi Trevor and others,

What do you think of the following idea:

There are several shapes that can be generated by LPub3D.
For example the PLI box and Callout box with their properties like border, background color, etc.

Would it be possible to add these kind of shapes as objects?

Implement as right-click "Add shape > box" or in the Edit menu "Add shape > box"
Maybe a circle too or lines too?

These boxes should be able to have the same properties as the PLI and Callout box, like square or round border, background color or transparent, etc. Position dragable on single step pages or relative to other objects on multi step pages.

Regarding this I have yet another request: would it be possible to be able to reshape existing shapes (using handles like you can do now with the callout arrows and images).
For example I sometimes want a a Callout box to be bigger or otherwise shaped than the generated one.

[LPub3D] Start page count at... (no replies)

Hi Trevor,

I barely dare to ask another wish, but I think this one is not that complicated.
Forgive me if I am wrong.....

Can the page couter be made to start a certain number?
Sometimes building a large model requires to split the instructions in to more than one book (like LEGO does often)
I'd like to start the page number of the next book at the number where I left of in the previous book.

Sorry if I ask too much, but this is one thing I've been looking for long but forgot.

LPub3D, BufferExchange with CallOut (no replies)

Hi,

I'm quiet new at building LEGO digitally. When I was younger, it was more the manually trial and error way :-).
For my 6 years old boy I started to build little Upgrades for his LEGO. So I decided to build a station waggon in the design of his goods train. I just took the middle part of the highspeed-train (60051) and changed the colors and some of the parts, which are not available in the colors I need. Now I'm preparing the instruction and got two minor problems, which I'm not able to solve:

First, I created a CallOut for the bogies and want to show how to fit into the chassis (like it's done in the original instruction. But I don't get it done. I set up the instruction with MLCad and worked with BufferExchange and Ghosts. That worked fine without the Callouts. So I started using LPub3D but I didn't find a way to get it like the original. In the screenshot you can see what I have at the moment.

The second thing you can see in the screenshot as well. The model is quiet dark and it would be better, if the arrows for CallOut would be in an other color. How can I change it?

Thanx for your help,
Lutz

LDCad OR LDD- How to adjust length of linear actuators (2 replies)

Is there a way to change the length of a linear actuator in a drawing? If not are there a variety of lengths that can be added to the library?

OR - as I suspect is the answer - do you just position it in line and leave it hanging?

Thanx,
Ed

Part snapping plate 1x1 round in LDCad is difficult? (5 replies)

Is it me and is this a silly question or does anyone else experience difficulty placing a 1x1 plate round in LDCad with part snapping turned on? Dragging this part from the part bin to the model almost never finds a connection or a strange one for me.

I am having serious trouble placing this part in any model while other (small) parts (like a normal 1x1 plate) work perfectly fine.

LPub3D - POV-Ray rendering not working (1 reply)

I've just installed POV-ray and I'm trying to find out what I can do with it from LPub3D

I have gone to Configuration > Preferences > Rendering, ticked the POV-Ray is installed box and found the path for POV-Ray: (C:\Program Files\POV-Ray\v3.7\bin\pvengine64.exe) and L3P (C:\Program Files (x86)\LDraw\LPub3D\3rdParty\l3p1.4WinB\L3P.EXE).
I have also ticked the LGEO is available box as I installed that too (with the AIOI), but I am confused about what to put in that field. There is no executable, so my best guess is C:\Program Files (x86)\LDraw\LGEO

With this in place I have set Preferred Renderer to POV-Ray and tried to render the first page of a set of instructions I am working on. However, POV-Ray throws error message after error message saying something is wrong. I have tried to figure out how to copy the information in the message pane (POV-Ray itself sends me to the Edit menu, but I can't seem to find what I need there) so I can post it here and ask what I may be doing wrong.

The program can be used to easily create models of train track layouts, using LDRAW parts.

There even are custom additions available for custom track parts:
